First 15 minutes

Incident checklists

A sequenced order of operations for the first minutes: safety, location, exchange of details, and what to write down before memory fades.

Sedan stopped on a highway shoulder at dusk with hazard lights and a warning triangle

01

Make the scene safe first

Hazards on, vehicle as far off the travel lane as the shoulder allows, wheels turned away from traffic. Nothing else matters until that is done.

02

Fix your location

Mile marker, cross street, exit number, or a screenshot of your map pin. A precise location shortens every call that follows.

03

Write while it is fresh

Time, direction of travel, weather, lane, and the sequence of events in your own words. Recall degrades within the hour.
