Roadside safety

Positioning, hazard signaling, when staying inside is safer than standing outside, and how to handle narrow shoulders and low visibility.

Positioning

01

Inside can be safer

On a narrow shoulder with fast traffic, a belted occupant inside the vehicle is often better protected than a person standing beside it.

02

Exit away from traffic

Use the passenger side when the shoulder is tight, and move behind a barrier where one exists.

03

Signal early

Hazards, dome light at night, and a triangle placed well back give approaching drivers time to react.
